So, since this was so last minute, I decided to make green rice krispy treats in the shape of a shamrock. TA-DA: Shamrock Cereal Bars. Hey! It was quick and easy. Plus, I haven't eaten a rice krispy treat in so long I forgot that they taste amazing. I mean seriously, there aren't many things that taste this good in only 10 minutes.
At first, I was a little confused about how I was going to dye them green. I looked for green marshmallows at the grocery store, and I was sorely disappointed. No easy way out for me. So, I decided just to dive in with the food coloring.
Here's how I went about dying the marshmallows. First, I followed the rice krispy treats directions. I added 3 tbls of butter to a large microwavable bowl. It's supposed to only take 45 seconds to melt the butter in the microwave, but mine decided to take longer. Anyways, then I toss a whole package of marshmallows in the butter bowl and added about a teaspoon of green food coloring. I tossed the marshmallows a little more after that. Then into the microwave they went. Even though it only takes 1 minute 30 seconds to melt marshmallows, I stirred after 45 seconds. The food coloring was turning out wonderful!
I added the allotted 6 cups of rice krispies to the marshmallows, and stirred like a mad lady. Then, of course, I flattened the mixture into a greased 13x9 inch pan. Then, because I'm impatient, I popped the pan in the fridge.
I happend to love my rice krispy treat gooey, but I let these harden a little longer so I could easily cut them with my shamrock cookie cutter. I'd say they turned out pretty well.
If you have little ones, these would be very easy to include them on, too!
Very fun for St. Patty's day! My boys will love these :)
