Why I use vinegar in my dishwasher

Today, I'm blogging about vinegar. Yes, vinegar! Why? Because it has truly saved my sanity.

You see, Hubby and I have lived in four different places in our short four years of marriage. And, in all of those places we had a dishwasher. I have always had problems with my dishes getting clean. Not once have I ever been able to unload every single one of my dishes on the first try. I have tried everything, and I finally found what I needed.

Ok, so I know most of you are probably saying, "Duh! You are supposed to run vinegar through your empty dishwasher to clean it." Yeah, I tried that. It did not work. So, I thought it was my detergent and I changed that. Still, no luck. So one day, I decided I was going to put the vinegar in my prewash slot and my regular detergent in the main wash slot. BAM - clean, sparkly dishes. OH YEAH!

I mean, I had run this one dish through the dishwasher at least four times. This time, it came out looking brand new! I was so excited that I thought it was a fluke. It had to be. So, I tried it the next time. This time, I had dried chocolate in a mixing bowl. I was convinced I would have to hand-wash it. Nope. Clean as a freakin whistle!

Now, I use vinegar as my prewash every single time I run the dishwasher. It is truly amazing. I was just hoping for clean dishes, but I got so much more. My glasses never have water spots. Shortening comes off my spoons every single time.

So, that is why I use vinegar as part of my dishwasher detergent, and that's why you should too. :)

  1. Love this tip! I really hate it when half my dishes come out still dirty, so definitely trying this.

    Have a lovely weekend.

  2. Have you ever tried using JUST vinegar in your dishwasher? Someone recently told me that they stopped buying dishwasher detergent all together and switched entirely to vinegar, since its high acidity kills most germs and bacteria. I'm on the last legs of my bottle of dishwasher detergent and am trying to decide whether or not I want to give it a whirl!

    1. I've done that once, but it was just a rewash. That makes sense though.

    2. I wonder if this worked for you? I am considering eliminating the dishwasher soap altogether. I always wash off my dishes before putting them in the dishwasher anyway, so it's really more of a sanitizing process than anything. So tired of the dishes being cloudy and this "new" dishwasher has never gotten the dishes clean! Well, I did buy the second to the cheapest, so maybe you get what you pay for. Appreciate your input. I see this post is 3 years old, but hopefully you can tell me if using vinegar regularly is okay to do?

  3. Oh wow! I had never thought to try the vinegar as a pre-wash! Brilliant! Definitely trying this the next time I run a load of dishes through the dishwasher.
I ALWAYS end up with a handful of dishes that still need to be hand washed afterwards & it drives me nuts!
    Thanks for the tip! :)

  4. I am going to try this next time I run mine. I don't usually have any dishes that need to be re-washed, but it certainly can't hurt! Thanks for the tip.

  9. I need to see if I have a place to put the vinegar as a pre-wash. I will say I love love love my dishwasher, but we have a set of glasses that get foggy looking due to our hard water, and we soak them in vinegar periodically, so I'm thinking this trick will help prevent that.

  14. I have a VERY old dishwasher but it works good or i think it does...lol but i dont have a spot to put the vinegar so do u think i could just poor it in the bottom? and if so how much??

    ReplyDelete

    1. Absolutely! My pre-wash slot is actually open, so it runs to the bottom anyways. I would use a little less than 1/8 cup.

  16. I am going to try this tomorrow. We really need a new dishwasher because our dishes end up dirtier than when they went in (and just yesterday I told my husband I should just stop looking inside cups before using them because they're all dirty)... but if the vinegar helps maybe we can put off getting a new dishwasher for a while longer. :) Thanks for sharing!

  18. I have been using vinegar for this for years too! I buy it by the gallon just for this. People always ask how my glasses stay so shiny, I tell them vinegar! I just slosh a little in the bottom then add my regular soap. Works like a charm!
